Cloud Computing Approaches to Point Cloud Data Management with Open Source Software
Managing massive collections of point cloud data is rapidly becoming a burden for many organizations as the cost of acquisition rapidly plunges. A defining characteristic of point cloud data captured using active scanners such as lasers or passively created from imagery is their volume. The challenging volume is well suited to the scalable computing that cloud environments provide, but few software tools were previously available on those platforms to meet the challenges in ways that truly leverage them. We will describe two open source software approaches called Entwine and Greyhound for organizing and managing point cloud collections of more than a trillion points in size. We will show how you can use these to provide browser-based visualization of your point cloud content, enable a single access web service for point cloud data, and leverage web services to ease the data management burden on your organization. With these web services in place, your organization can begin to construct software and processes that holistically manage your point cloud content for data visualization, quality control, algorithmic exploitation, and data editing.
