Fixed Wing UAV with LiDAR Hyperspectral Imaging and Real Time Processing
Carbomap will demonstrate that a fixed-wing UAV platform operating in a BVLOS framework and operating a LiDAR and Multispectral camera is the right technology for modern forest mapping and inventory and timber estimation. Furthermore, we will describe our instant-Ω unit that processes the captured data in real time, ready for upload to the users spatial data platform on landing of the UAV.
Carbomap have been working with partners RIEGL and Itres to present the very first results from a collaboration undertaken with UAVE Ltd which saw a fixed-wing UAV platform, the UAVE ‘Prion Mk 3’, carry a RIEGL VUX-SYS airborne scanning system, integrated with an Itres microCASI-1920 and Carbomap’s instant-Ω system, to collect data over multiple forest stands in a single flight on a Beyond Visual Line Of Sight (BVLOS) flight configuration.
The UAVE fixed-wing platform was originally designed for use on Antarctic missions, and is therefore able to withstand a range of weather conditions, including extreme cold. It can fly for up to 14 hours at a cruising speed of 80 km/h at full payload (10 kg), which offers a linear coverage of up to 1120 km. The LiDAR system used is the RIEGL VUX-SYS, which is designed for use on UAVs. The fully integrated scanner VUX-1UAV has an online full-waveform processing capacity which allows an unlimited number of returns per laser shot offering enhanced vertical structural information of the surveyed forest with specialist data processing. The hyperspectral system used is an ITRES microCASI-1920. This hyperspectral sensor was designed for UAV, aircraft and ground-use. The microCASI is unique in that the sensor incorporates an embedded self-calibration system, which improves the overall data quality. This sensor generates well-calibrated, accurate and repeatable hyperspectral data. Carbomap’s instant-Omega system is an hardware add-on that enables on-board data real-time processing capability and data streaming into the cloud.
