Surveying a Billion Dollar State Asset

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) enlisted Rice Associates (RA) to conduct a limited location survey for 15 miles of Interstate 64 centered on the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel. This segment of highway is the primary transportation artery for the Hampton Roads area and is subject to excessive traffic volumes and substantial congestion on a daily basis. The corridor included the interchanges with I-564 and I-664 along with approximately 5 miles of bridge and tunnel surveys. Data fusion from multiple geospatial technologies were brought together into a seamless survey deliverable. The technologies included: conventional surveying, aerial photogrammetry, aerial LiDAR, mobile LiDAR (vehicle based), mobile LiDAR (marine vessel based), and subsurface utility detection.
