USGS Program Updates

Wednesday, April 24, 2019 | 11:00AM – 12:00PM Eastern Time

Following the 2019 International Lidar Mapping Forum in Denver, we are pleased to present this informative webinar, in which three (3) USGS representatives will deliver presentations that were cancelled due to the recent federal government shutdown. Since USGS is such a critical component of the commercial lidar industry, we believe that helping their representatives share regular program updates with the commercial community is important. These presentations will provide an update of the ongoing 3D Elevation Program (3DEP), the strategic data acquisition plan for 3DEP, and changes to the USGS Lidar Base Specification review and approval process.

Speakers

Vicki Lukas, USGS
3D Elevation Program Status and Future Directions

Vicki Lukas is the Chief of Topographic Data Services in the National Geospatial Program of the USGS, where she oversees the 3D Elevation Program and the National Hydrography Datasets of The National Map. Vicki has over 25 years of experience as a Geographer at the USGS. Past positions include overseeing partnership activities of The National Map and the national network of Liaisons, serving as a mapping liaison in the western U.S., and beginning her career in digital geologic mapping. Vicki has been the project lead on multiple mapping coordination initiatives, including the 3DEP Executive Forum, the Alaska Mapping Roundtable and Executive Committee, and the project team of the National States Geographic Information Council and National Association of Counties to develop partnering mechanisms for The National Map program.

Diane Eldridge, USGS
3D Elevation Program (3DEP) Strategic Acquisition Plan

Diane Eldridge is employed as a physical scientist at the US Geological Survey National Geospatial Program. Ms. Eldridge has been with the USGS since 1989. She currently serves as the co-chairman for the FGDC 3D Nation Elevation Subcommittee, the co-lead of the FGDC Elevation Theme, the chairman of the multi-agency 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) Working Group and serves as the 3DEP Acquisition Coordinator, responsible for developing acquisition strategies that result in Nation-wide 3DEP Coverage.

James Kaufmann, USGS
The USGS Lidar Base Specification Review and Approval Process

James Kaufmann is the Standards Specialist for Elevation products for the US Geological Survey’s National Geospatial Technical Operations Center (NGTOC). He is responsible for maintaining the specifications for products acquired through the 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) for the National Geospatial Program. This includes maintaining and updating the Lidar Base Specification. Prior to joining NGTOC, James was a Research Physical Scientist for the USGS-EROS center specializing in karst geomorphology and sinkhole hazard research. In this capacity, he made extensive use of lidar in combination with other geospatial datasets.
